Back to Lanzarote

surf lanzarote andy criere

In such a crazy year it has been a big opportunity to be able to travel to the Canary Islands. I just wanted to keep surfing and attend a meeting with the Spanish Surf Team. Like every year around this time, I have returned to Lanzarote to enjoy good waves and better weather than in the Basque Country. It is also a good place to isolate yourself and fully enjoy all that peace that the island gives you back.

The first week I had a shooting with ION, a German brand of technical products of which I am an ambassador for the products of the following season. For this work, ION once again relied on the Studio Bruma team, of whom I have been close friends since my first trips to the island. Once again the shooting went well. As a bonus we were able to get together with friends to talk about our things, eat well and laugh …

After almost two weeks in Gran Canaria we decided to return to Lanzarote to put the waves aside and enjoy the centers of interest such as Jameos Del Agua, Mirador Del Río and the Timanfaya National Park.  It is highly advisable to visit them all but it is essential to know the history of Cesar Manrique first:

When the end of this trip began to approach and taking advantage of a good part we left for La Graciosa. There we did the day surfing a wave that breaks a few times a year and it was a spectacular experience. Se enjoyed it because we had Día Sanz as our guide. Día is the son of Javi Polo and Anita who, in addition to being great guides, have also been one of the first surfers on the island. They love life and it seems that life gives it back to them. It’s nice to spend time with them and improvise plans that make you feel alive.

 As I just left you wanting, I invite you to call them to get to know the most beautiful corners of the island and make plans in the open air: +34 618 418 556.

Here it goes a shortlist of tips for you to take into account if you are going to surf or visit Lanzarote. I consider those tips essential in order to protect this paradise for the benefit of everyone;

  • Do not enter the peak of many people at once (Whenever I visit a place that is not where I grew up, I try to surf alone or at most two people so as not to saturate the peaks)
  • Always support the local community. There are very good coaches like Franito or Jose María Cabrera, to local photographers or filmmakers like David Toribio or Ginés Díaz or physical trainers like Reboso La Santa or Rubén Gonzalez. I think it is essential to have local people somehow leave something on that site you are visiting.
  • Consume local. Whenever I visit Lanzarote I consume their product, they have first-hand vegetables and fish of the best quality that you can find in the country. You can shop at Finca Chinijo, or Finca Vegacosta, or shop at small local businesses like Lourdes in Soo. Make sure that the product is from the island and that way you also support local agriculture.
  • If you are looking for surf schools, make sure they are certified and can be run by locals. You can write to Manuel Lezcano or La Santa Surf, both of which are very good and 100% recommended.

I also leave a list of my favorite places to eat on the island…

To finish, I recommend 5 places to eat in the different areas of the island.

 1. La Mar Café, Famara. Healthy and very well decorated cafe / restaurant roll.

 2. La Puerta Verde, Haría. Restaurant with daily dishes and well prepared fresh fish.

 3. Bar Stop, Yaiza. Typical Canarian restaurant that seems intact at the time and homemade food.

 4. Bar Strava, Arrecife. Restaurant in a nice corner and healthy food.

 5. Casa Morelino, Tiagua. Very very rich Italian restaurant. I recommend the tricolore pizza.

 Happy Holidays to all!
